Developing a Business Idea: How to Turn Your Idea into a Viable Company
Table of contents
At a glance
A good business idea alone is not enough for a successful formation. Those who prepare their project carefully recognise risks early, plan realistically and build a solid foundation for the start. This includes not only the market and finances but also your own personal preparation.
The key points at a glance:
- Check whether your business idea solves a real problem and whether there is sufficient demand.
- Analyse your target group and the competition before investing time and money.
- Draw up a business plan and plan financing and capital requirements realistically.
- Assess your personal prerequisites honestly, such as resilience, expertise and financial reserves.
- Seek advice early to avoid typical mistakes and prepare your formation securely.
Developing a business idea: why a strong idea is more than a good thought
- a distinct positioning
- easier access to customers
- better chances with banks and funding bodies
- a solid basis for your business plan
How to develop your idea further
Think from the problem to the solution
- inefficient processes, for example in appointment scheduling
- high time expenditure, for example in research or administration
- lack of transparency, for example in price comparison
- skills shortages in specialised services
Define the target group first
Get feedback early
In our practice we often see founders spending weeks on the company name while paying little attention to the company purpose. Yet both topics belong together from the outset. The company purpose describes what your company does and plays an important role, particularly when forming a GmbH or UG. How to word it appropriately is explained in the article defining the company purpose.
Assess your target group and market realistically
A market analysis sounds like a lot of work, but it is your protection against costly misjudgements. It shows whether there is enough demand, how strong the competition is and at what prices products are sold.
- How big is my market, and is it growing or stagnating?
- Who offers similar solutions, and what do they do well or badly?
- What prices are customary in my industry?
Business plan and finances: your guiding thread
What belongs in a solid business plan
- Market and target group analysis: who buys, and how big is the market?
- Business model and revenue planning: how do you make money?
- Capital requirements and start-up costs: what investments are needed? The article what company formation costs gives an overview.
- Liquidity and profitability calculation: when will you break even?
- Marketing and sales: how do you win customers?
- Opportunities and risks: what influences your development?
Build the financial plan honestly
Running costs and your own living expenses are almost always underestimated. So plan for investments (technology, software), start-up costs (marketing, website, advice), running costs (rent, insurance) and your private budget for at least 6 to 12 months. The federal funding database (Förderdatenbank, in German), which bundles funding programmes of the federal government, the states and the EU, offers an overview of suitable funding options.

Personal suitability
Basic organisational decisions
- Which legal form suits me? The article choosing a legal form helps.
- Which permits do I need, for example for skilled trades, catering or consulting?
- Where should the registered office be? A virtual office is also possible, see incorporating with a virtual office.
- Which insurance and which software do I need?
Make use of support early
It is rarely too early in a formation. Get in touch before the appointment, not after. Many questions can be settled in a short conversation and save you a second round. How the structure of your future company looks is explained in the article structure of a company.
Typical mistakes when preparing your formation
- The idea was not sufficiently tested; there is no pressing customer problem.
- The market analysis remains superficial; risks are underestimated.
- The financial plan is too optimistic; reserves are missing.
- Legal form, permits or registered office are unresolved.
- No external advice is used; avoidable mistakes occur.
Do not worry: preparation does not mean perfection
You do not have to know everything at the start. Nobody begins with the perfect plan. What matters is that you have thought honestly about the big questions once: idea, market, money and legal form. The rest you will settle, often together with advisers and the notary. Those who come well prepared to the notary appointment save time and gain certainty.
Also expect your idea to change in the first months. Almost every business model evolves once the first real customers arrive and you see what actually works in the market. Such adjustments are completely normal and often exactly the point at which a good idea becomes a viable business.
More from the series: preparing for formation
Not sure yet which legal form suits your idea or when a notary appointment is required?
Book an appointment and discuss your questions directly with the notary, often within a few working days.
Frequently asked questions about preparing your formation
Start with the problem you solve. Consider who specifically has this problem, how often it occurs and how urgent it is. A short description of your typical customer helps to gain clarity.
Look at market size, competition and demand. Freely accessible sources such as Google Trends, IHK industry information and Destatis are often enough for initial decisions.
Common options are equity, bank loans, microloans, subsidised loans and grants. For scalable models, business angels are also an option. A business plan is almost always a prerequisite.
You choose the legal form, have the company name checked, define the company purpose and clarify the necessary permits. Early advice from a notary or tax adviser helps to avoid mistakes.
At the latest when you want to form a UG or GmbH, because the articles of association must be notarised. An early conversation is worthwhile even before that, to plan the structure properly.
